Responsibilities

As a veterinary surgeon, you’ll need to:

  • Promote and maintain the health of animals
  • Advise owners on how to care and feed animals
  • Adhere to the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons Code of Professional conduct
  • Know the law surrounding animals and their welfare
  • Adhere to practices  guidelines and procedures 
  • Comply with Health and Safety and COSHH policies 
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date clinical treatment records
  • Actively promote veterinary surgeon jobs and your career
  • Undertake regular CPD and liaise with other professionals within the industry 
  • Improve professional clinical standards, quality and safety of care.

Skills

As a veterinary surgeon, you are expected to:

  • Meet and consult with pet and animal owners
  • Work in a surgery environment, visit animals in the natural surroundings and carry out home visits
  • Examine and treat a whole range of different species depending on speciality 
  • Prescribe the appropriate treatment and operate if necessary
  • Carry out tests such as x-rays, blood samples and ultrasound scans
  • Neuter animals to prevent them from breeding
  • Immunise animals against different types of disease
  • Euthanise old and terminally ill animals
  • Diagnose illnesses in a variety of different animals
  • Handle uncooperative animals and owners 
  • Ensure all work is billed correctly 
  • Working on call as and when required
  • Have a strong work ethic and caring approach always
  • Administer regular vaccinations and inoculations
  • Perform routine and complex operations including, castrations, neutering and post-accident 
  • Carrying out a variety of scans including x-rays, haematology, faecal analysis, ultrasounds and biopsies.
