Responsibilities

As a Vet Nurse, you’ll need to:

  • Promote and maintain the health of animals.
  • Educate animal owners on nutrition and preventative care and providing basic behavioural advice.
  • Adhere to the British Nursing Association code of conduct.
  • Know the law surrounding animals and their welfare.
  • Adhere to practices guidelines and procedures.
  • Comply with Health and Safety and COSHH policies.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date clinical treatment records
  • Take payments from customers.
  • Actively promote vet nursing jobs. 
  • Undertake regular CPD and liaise with other professionals within the industry. 
  • Improve professional clinical standards, quality and safety of care.

Skills

As a Vet Nurse, you are expected to:

  • Prepare animals for surgery and performing minor surgical procedures.
  • Monitor anaesthetised animals.
  • Nurse sick animals and administer medication.
  • Take x-rays and carry out diagnostic tests.
  • Advise owners on the health and welfare of their pets.
  • Take bookings, payments and complete necessary paperwork
  • Confidently handle and restrain animals. 
  • Provide nursing care to hospitalised patients.
  • Patient monitoring, feeding, grooming and walking animals. 
  • Administer treatments including injections, tablets, fluids and blood transfusions. 
  • Provide support to animals and their owners before and after operations.
  • Assist in the operating theatre.
  • Carry out veterinary nurse consultations.
  • Observe and record patients’ vital signs (temperature, pulse, respiration and pain).
  • Apply bandages to wounds and fractures.
